What is RSS?

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is an XML format designed for sharing web content, such as news headlines. RSS enables publishers and companies to send alerts and news updates to interested audiences. By subscribing to an RSS feed, news alerts that most interest you are delivered straight to your desktop or online news aggregator. In short, news from multiple web sites and publications is delivered (via RSS feeds) to one medium for easy and efficient viewing.

Why should you be interested in RSS?

You can hand-select the specific type of news that interests you. For example, with the New York Times, you could select news only from the "Business," "Arts" or "Your Money" sections rather than receiving all New York Times headlines. At Deluxe, you can select news specific to investor relations, corporate happenings or new products, as well as sign up for job notifications.

What is nice about RSS is that your reader, also referred to as an aggregator, serves as a clearinghouse for news and updates from all of your favorite web sites and blogs. The data feeds (or updates) can include headlines, summaries and links to full stories. Rather than browsing several web sites to see if new articles have been posted, you can simply get an update delivered straight to your desktop RSS reader or your MyYahoo! account. There is no e-mail clutter and no need to share personal information to receive the updates.

Where can I find a RSS reader program?

There are many different news readers or aggregators. Some desktop applications are easy to download and free (such as sharpreader.net or feedreader.com). Other RSS readers are web-based services you sign-up for that work inside your browser, such as MyYahoo!
